Social Events
The church organises various events throughout the year both social events and fundraisers for church or for charities.
St Mark’s Church believes it is important to support the work of charities. We try to give the equivalent of 13% of our planned income to a variety of charities each year. We achieve this by having a wide selection of events. Ranging from concerts, Lent Lunches, Harvest suppers, quizzes to retiring collections in church. We hold a Christmas Eve Christingle and we go Carol Singing at Oxenholme railway station.
Over the years events have included a Crib Fest, Angel Fest, a Teddy Bears Picnic, and an Everest Climb. We have held successful Summer Fetes, Christmas Coffee mornings and lots more. We have sold jigsaws for charity during the winter months. We have collected toys for the Salvation Army Christmas appeal and we have a Food bank collection point in the porch.
Our Everest Challenge saw our curate climb the tower steps 500 times, all within eight days. (The Height of Everest) The money raised was split between the church and International Nepal Fellowship.
Most months we hold a charity fund-raising coffee morning. This is usually on a Thursday morning after the mid-week communion service
It is not all about raising money but also having fun and getting to know each other better during events like.
Other activities
A team of volunteers from church help at the Toddler Group (Mini Marks) in the school hall on a Wednesday morning.
Members also are involved with the Helm Mission Community Eco Prayer and Action group which meets on the fourth Saturday of the month. We vary our meeting place around the Mission Community or visit places like the RSPB Leighton Moss reserve in Silverdale. We have raised our concerns with our local MPs, we have raised money for the Bee Conservation Trust and we have helped each other on becoming Eco churches.
